Love can happen anywhere, and the story of this elderly couple is a perfect example.
Romance blossomed on a Broadway dance floor when the teacher, a dressmaker, gave a fitter and turner a dancing lesson.
The couple married at St Paul's Church, Redfern, on Remembrance Day, 1944, and Bob and Mavis Carveth celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on November 11.
The newlyweds lived at Kensington, then Tempe, before moving to Penshurst in May 1964 with their three children — Bill, Beverley and Robert.
According to Mr Carveth, their children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were among the highlights of their lives.
"I didn't think I'd live this long," he said of the longevity of the marriage.
"I think the secret of such a long marriage is the sharing of ideas, negotiating, talking about problems and keeping a level head."
Mrs Carveth became a full-time homemaker while her husband started a car engine reconditioning company in St George.
The Carveths were members of the Oatley Lions Club and part of a group that took people with disabilities away for weekends. Mrs Carveth also delivered Meals on Wheels.
They continued to dance together weekly until 2011 when Mr Carveth had a stroke. Mrs Carveth had a fall in April last year and moved to Ferndale Gardens Aged Care Facility in Mortdale, where Bob spends most of every day with her.
